Chapter Five

Bryn

Kace and I were waiting outside the village primary school when the children were let out for the day. It was a school only for the younger children from ages four to twelve—the older ones went to a different school in the next village. We waited for all of them to stream past us, either getting into their mothers’ cars or meeting ladies pushing prams or holding smaller children in their arms. When it seemed most of them had gone, we ventured into the school and went to the main office, where we asked for Morag Brody, and were sent right away to her room down a short hallway.

I followed Kace, anxious to see this lady and be proven right, confident she would have no knowledge of either me or my father, and we could finally be on our way to find someone who actually mattered—someone who could maybe shed some light on this Sea Witch who stole my skin.

A short, plump woman of probably middle age was writing on the white board as we came to the door. Kace cleared his throat and said, “Excuse me, Madam, I wonder if we might ask you a few questions.”

The woman turned as we stood there, a pleasant smile on her lips and her eyebrows raised slightly in question. But when she looked past Kace and saw me, she gasped out loud and staggered back into the wall, literally clutching her heart. Her eyes rolled back in her head, and she began to crumple to the floor almost in slow motion. Kace rushed forward to catch her and break her fall.

He caught her around the waist and eased her to the floor, loosening the top button on her blouse as her eyelids fluttered. He chafed her hand between his. “Are you all right, madam? Are you ill? Can we call someone for you?”

“N-no,” she said, blinking rapidly as she came out of her faint. She peered past his shoulder and looked up at me fearfully. “I’m sorry. It’s just been so long since I’ve... Oh my goodness, he is beautiful, isn’t he?”

Kace glanced at me in surprise and then back at her. “Yes, he is.”

“He’s a Selkie, isn’t he?”

Kace looked astonished and sat back on his heels, seeming to be at a loss for words. I remembered that he’d told me it was strictly against Prince Levi’s laws for any human to know about the creatures from the Vargr Realm. If a human ever found out, in fact, their memories would be wiped clean or else we’d have them taken to our Realm. Though they were treated well, they were never allowed to return to their own world, the consensus among the government officials being that if humanity discovered all the creatures of their dreams and nightmares were real, there would be a general panic. I pulled at Kace’s arm and leaned in to whisper fiercely in his ear.

“Now what do we do?”

He picked her up from the floor as if she weighed nothing and helped her to get settled in a chair.
